Steve Lacy is certainly one of the very best in the world on his instrument, the soprano saxophone. Here surrounded among others (it's a sextet) by his accomplice Irène Aebi on cello and prodigy Jacques Thollot on drums, he plays five compositions oscillating between structures and improvisations.
Steve Lacy is like that, he likes freedom, but he also likes limits, this Roman recording leans towards openness and free creativity, it is also the sound of an era!
